Very little MCT gets converted into body fat, because MCTs are rapidly burned for energy.
Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCTs) are fats with an unusual chemical structure that allows the body to digest them easily. Most fats are broken down in the intestine and remade into a special form that can be transported in the blood. But MCTs are absorbed intact and taken to the liver, where they are used directly for energy.
Researchers now know that the increased ketosis and energy associated with MCT oil is related to the length of the fatty acid chains contained in MCT oil. MCT oil contains what are called medium chain fatty acids, or medium chain triglycerides (MCTs for short). These medium chain fatty acids are different from the common longer chain fatty acids (LCTs) found in other plant-based oils (like for cooking) or the oils in butter.
Most vegetable oils are composed of longer chain fatty acids, or triglycerides (LCTs). LCTs are typically stored in the body as fat, while MCTs are burned for energy. MCTs burn up quickly in the body. MCT oil can increase metabolic rates and lead to weight loss. MCTs promote what is called thermogenesis. Thermogenesis increases the body's metabolism, increase ketoses and helps to produce energy.
Studies indicate that MCTs will not increase serum cholesterol levels.
